Kasey and Yael met at SVA and quickly became close friends, bonding over their shared experiences growing up in religious families and now navigating their own identities. They wanted to create something that reflected their journey and kept the spirit of childhood fun alive as they faced adulthood. Their final project at SVA explores the idea of communities that feel like family—cults came to mind. Curious about the harm cults cause, they realized it’s due to the loss of individuality and freedom. So, they asked, “What if we designed the first good cult?” Using design to emphasize individuality, they created RHIZ.

Visual Reference: Ginger symbolizes individualism, with each piece having its own unique shape. This inspired the creation of logos and symbols.

The Space: Designed around ginger’s unique curves, the building includes spaces for rituals: the release ring at the center, the burning forces ritual below, and a ginger selection area on the balcony. Billboards around the building reinforce the message of individuality.
